Score Sentiment of Amazon Reviews in Power BI Premium Dataflows

September 7 2020

Power BI

In this blog post, I will demonstrate how to consume cognitive services in Power BI Premium, using a publicly available dataset of Amazon music instrument reviews. I want to score the sentiment of the review text and compare that with the number of stars given to any given product. The main purpose of this post is to show at a high-level how to use Azure Cognitive Services in Power BI Premium inside dataflows. A basic working knowledge of Power BI Desktop and the Power BI service is assumed, and access to Power BI Premium with a functioning gateway is required.

Perhaps one of the most crucial steps in creating effective visualization tools in Power BI is modeling your data. As data analysts, our goals are to make data exploration faster, make reports more accurate, and make the data and reports easy to maintain over time. If you model your data correctly, then it makes it possible for these goals to be achievable. With there being so much that goes into data modeling, it can be difficult to know where to start.

In this post, I present 5 tips that can help you model data in a way that can help you be successful in visualizing data in Power BI.

Handling Mixed Type Columns in Power BI

August 10 2020

Power BI

Recently when working with a JSON file in Power BI I was faced with a problem. I had a field in the JSON file that could contain one or many records in it. The built-in parsing identified the rows as being a mixture of records and lists (there is no native way to expand only the lists and then records). Because of this, it wasn’t able to extract the values from the column.

Power BI

Power BI connects to 115+ data sources. A webpage connector is very useful and enables data stored on websites to be mashed up and analyzed. When several webpages in a given URL share the same structure and content (e.g., a page for each year or category), the creation of a parameter for the URL and a function to replicate the Power Query code can import all of the data into a single data-set. This blog post will demonstrate how to do just that.
